Like all sports equipment and facilities, climbing facilities and the equipment used are subject to wear and tear under normal use and must undergo appropriate safety checks.
The German Social Accident Insurance (DGUV) provides guidance on this matter. Its guidelines for sports hall inspections stipulate that equipment and facilities in sports halls must be inspected for safety at appropriate intervals.
In addition to the climbing wall itself, the building's anchor points, and the life-saving rope pulleys and belay points, the safety equipment, such as ropes, harnesses, carabiners, etc., must also undergo regular inspection and maintenance. The holds, with their high-quality, open-pored surface, also become dirty depending on the frequency of use and should be cleaned. Therefore, in addition to regular inspections, an annual safety inspection of the climbing wall should be carried out by a specialist company. This inspection checks, for example, the building connection, the substructure, the safety equipment, etc., for their proper condition.
